The federal capital wants to start its own COVID 19 tests among teachers, kindergarten teachers and police officers.

The mega project is to be carried out between December 2 and 13.

Vienna wants to start as soon as possible, so that there is a sufficient number of people to be tested”, said the responsible health city councillor Peter Hacker (SPÖ). The reason: “Nobody will get tested if they have to expect to spend the holidays in quarantine”.

The three test lines for the mass tests are to be set up in the Messe Wien, in the Marx-Halle and in the Stadthalle. They will run in addition to the existing test roads in the Prater near Happel Stadium and on the Danube Island near the Floridsdorf Bridge. This will create a total of 300 additional walk-in lanes, each of which can serve 500 people per day. “This is 50 times the capacity of the current test lane at the stadium,” Hacker continued. This brings the city of Vienna to a total capacity of 150,000 tests per day.

During the 12 days, up to 1.2 million Viennese will be checked for the corona virus.

Similar to the existing test lanes, the mass test lanes will function by appointment. At all three new locations there are hygienically safe waiting areas; the test lanes are to be open for 10 hours a day on each of the “test days”.

The antigen method will be used for the mass tests. These tests will be performed by trained personnel of the Austrian Armed Forces. In case of a positive result, the City of Vienna will verify the results with PCR tests. “This will be done right on the spot, with personnel of the city”, says Hacker. Gurgling tests will be used.

Further measures such as quarantine notifications and contact tracing are also carried out by the Viennese health authority.
